How Nutrients are Transported in Plants

At least 90% of the food we eat has at some stage been transported through the Phloem of the plants and trees around us.

Phloem: In vascular plants, phloem is the living tissue that carries organic nutrients.

To prove a decades-old hypothesis about how nutrients are transported in plants, a biologist set up shop 40 feet high in a red oak tree.

How trees learn

A long line of trees near my home was blown over in last winter’s gales because it had been left vulnerable by foresters who had cut down a pine plantation in order to restore lowland heath.

The silver birch and oak were left at risk because the pines had been sheltering them from the prevailing wind, and they had insufficient time to brace themselves for the onslaught. (more…)

Poachers chop redwoods

Some of the tallest trees in the world are under threat from poachers who have found an unlikely target.

Huge knots of wood, or burls, which grow out of ancient redwood trees in northern California can be amputated from the tree, polished, then sold for thousands of dollars as table-tops and ornaments. (more…)

National Trust burn trees for power

The Trust said it planned to invest a total of £35 million in green energy projects and would save about £4 million each year as a result.

The National Trust is to power dozens of its properties by burning trees from its own woodland, under plans to switch to green energy and boost its coffers. (more…)
